In July of 2002, nine miners who had been caught in a flooded mine, waited for three days in a pitch black tunnel while those on the outside attempted to rescue them. To protect each other from slipping away into the darkness, they tied themselves together with rope. At one point, a mike had been let down so they communicate with those above. When they were finally rescued, the first words that were spoken were:

“We’ve been waiting for you.”
