The Bible records the Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed with “fire and brimstone.” Brimstone is Sulphur (“gophrit” in Hebrew). Throughout Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone is found embedded in the ground. It is highly flammable and when ignited it produces a toxic gas, Sulphur Dioxide (SO2 ).
There is only one area on earth where Sulphur “stones” are found… Sodom and Gomorrah. Sulphur found elsewhere on earth rarely exceeds 40% purity. The Sulphur at Sodom and Gomorrah is approximately 96% pure.
Both the Old and New Testaments identify this brimstone’s unearthly origin. Genesis 19:24 and Jesus in Luke 17:29 state that Brimstone “rained” on Sodom “from heaven”. Brimstone ignited in Sodom. Yellow residue is emitted. Burning brimstone emits a blue flame (visible in dark settings) indicating intense heat. As Brimstone continues to burn, it begins to melt and a few minutes later is liquefied Sulphur.
Jesus compared the day of Sodom’s sudden destruction to the day He “is revealed”. “The day Lot left Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. So shall it be in the day the Son of Man is revealed.” Luke 17:29-30
II Thessalonians 1:7-8 says “the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The Bible speaks of brimstone in future events: “The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” (Revelation 20:10) And “the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8). And “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.” (Luke 12:4-5)
