How I heard about the Good News

I would like to share how i met my savior. My parents are Chinese but I was born and grew up in Thailand. They are strict in religion so that I grew up with Buddhist environment. At that time I really believed in Buddha and other deities. I always followed what my parents asked me to do but after I met Tim Owens who is an English teacher at my university. Actually he is a missionary from America. It seemed like God had already planned this for me. It was so weird because before I got to know Tim, someone had sent me a book telling a story about Jesus. I don’t know who sent it to me until now. I was not interested in this book at all until I met Tim. He came to me with his secretary and asked me if I was interested in going to the English Cultural Exchange Camp with him. I said yes because I wanted to improve and learn English.

When I was at the camp, there were 40 or 50 Americans. They talked to us and befriended us (Thai students) so much. it made me think that Americans are very nice and fun, not like what we have seen on TV at all.

At the time that we had to divide into a small group to exchange our culture, they started to talk about their beliefs and spread God’s news. So I suddenly realized that the English Camp has another purpose which was to spread God’s word. At first, I didn’t believe what they told me at all. After the camp, Tim and his secretary stayed in contact with me and asked me if I still wanted to come to the church to study English. I said, “Absolutely, yes, because it’s free.”

I was attending the church every Sunday to study English and then they asked me to join the service after class. I was going to the church for a year and a half, but I was not interested or beliefs it at all until one day Tim’s secretary came to me and asked me if I wanted to have a bible study with them. So I joined them because I was curious about why they are so nice and look so happy and what made them really believe in God.

I had studied the Bible with them for a while but I still had lots of questions and doubt. One day Tim’s secretary asked me, “Do you want to know God more,” and,” Do you want to accept God in to your life?” I don’t know how to explain my feeling but those words really touched me and I started to cry and that was the first time I prayed to God and decided to have him in my life. So that’s how I became a Christian.

How I heard about the Good News (3)

I would like to share my testimony about how I became a Christian. I am Chinese but I was born and grew up in Thailand. As you know, most Chinese people are Buddhist, which means my family is Buddhist too. My family is strictly religious, so I grew up a very Buddhist environment. Buddhist people believe that if you do good, you will get good in return and that the greatest sin is ungratefulness to your parents. I was taught to be grateful and to obey and respect my parents, so of course I believed everything that my parents said – especially my mom. She was like everything to me. She always told me that no one loves you as much as your parents; they would even die for you and no one else [would love you enough to do it].

I just want to share this because I want you to see how non-Christians, or Buddhists, believe as opposed to how Christians believe. In Thailand if you ask them whom they think loves them the most, they will all say it is their parents. But if we ask a Christian, they will definitely say it is God who loves us most. So I think this was God’s plan to let me have different experiences and to see how my life was before I became a Christian and how my life changed after I accepted him into my life.

About 4 years ago, I met a man named Tim Owens. This is how I heard about God. He was my English teacher but also a pastor at Canaan Baptist Church. It seemed to me like God had already planned this for me. It was so strange because a short while before I got to know Tim, I received a book in the mail that told the story of Jesus. To this day, I don’t know who sent it to me.

I was not interested in either of those books at all until I met Tim. He came to me with his secretary, Pom, and asked me if I was interested in going to the English Cultural Exchange Camp with them. I said yes because I wanted to improve my English and learn more.

When I was at the camp, there were 40 or 50 Americans. They told us that they came here to exchange cultures and to teach English. They were very friendly and fun. It made me realize that Americans [are completely different from what I had seen on TV, and they are very nice and fun people and easy to get to know.]

When it was time for us to divide into small groups to exchange our culture, they started to talk about their religious beliefs and share the good news of God. So I suddenly realized that the English Camp had another purpose, which was to spread God’s word.

At first, I didn’t believe the things they shared with me at all. I told Tim that I would like to know God more but that I couldn’t because of my family. I was very confused and didn’t know which way to choose but I was still going to the church to study English. And then one day while we were studying the Bible, Tim’s secretary said to me, “Do you want to know God more? If you really want to know him you have to open your heart to him.” Then she asked me, ”Do you want to accept God in to your life?” I don’t know how to explain what I felt at the time but those words really touched me and I started to cry and that was the first time I prayed to God and decided to accept him into my life. I am so blessed by him that he took me back although I was separated from him for so long, so now I want to give my life back to him. I am telling you this to you because I want you to see how amazing God is and how he worked on my life although I was in such a difficult place [coming from a Buddhist family]. All of us here are blessed so much compare with those who don’t know God.

In fact, when I was a child, about 7 or 8 years old, someone had also sent me a book in the mail that turned out to be a comic book about Jesus. And it didn’t say who the sender was either. So I asked my mom who sent this to us and she said, “Oh – maybe is was your aunt’s company” – because my aunt worked at printing press that distributed books to schools. So at that time I thought the comic book was from my aunt.

I was not interested in either of those books at all until I met Tim. He came to me with his secretary, Pom, and asked me if I was interested in going to the English Cultural Exchange Camp with them. But after the camp, Tim and his secretary still kept in touch with me and they asked me if I wanted to come to the church to study English – for free. They just wanted to help me because they knew that taking extra English courses outside of school is very expensive. I was thinking about this and then I asked my parents if I could go to the church to study English instead of hiring a teacher to come teach me at home or taking an extra English course.

I thought that if I went to the church there would probably be many foreigners and most of them would be about my age that would be a fun and effective way to learn English. [(maybe you don’t have to say this part because it’s off the subject) I was thinking this would be better for me because I had see a lot of people study English in classes since they were small but they couldn’t really speak English at all and beside, it’s very boring to study in aclass.] It was so good that my parents and my aunt approved because I was afraid they wouldn’t allow me to go to a church. So I was going to Canaan Baptist Church every Sunday to study English and the people there started asking me to join the worship service after class.

I went to church for full year and a half, but I was not interested and I did not believe the teachings at all until one day when Tim’s secretary came to me and asked me if I wanted to have a Bible study with them. That day I joined them because I was curious about why those people were so nice to me and looked so happy and I wanted to know what made them really believe in God.

I attended Bible study for a while but I still had lots of questions and doubts. And I just felt that I could not become a Christian because I didn’t want my parents to be sad and disappointed in me and definitely I didn’t want to appear to be an ungrateful daughter. But God is so amazing. He didn’t leave me there but worked on me more.

I told Tim that I would like to know God more but that I couldn’t because of my family. I was very confused and didn’t know which way to choose but I was still going to the church to study English. He worked on my life in such a difficult place. We all here are blessed so many compare with people who don’t know God.

And definitely I don’t want to be an ungrateful daughter but God he is so amazing. He didn’t even leave me but worked on me more.

My pastor said God has different plan for everyone and he also let us know him in the way he has planed for us. And then if you want to know him, you should be humble and open your heart for him. I told him that I would like to know God more but we can’t because our family. I was very confused and don’t know which way I should take but I was still going to the church to study English and then one day While we were studying bible Tim’s secretary asked me, “Do you want to know God more,” And if you really want to know him you have to open your heart so she asked me” Do you want to accept God in to your life?” I don’t know how to explain my feeling at that time but those words really touched me and I started to cry and that was the first time I prayed to God and decided to have him in my life. So that’s how I became a Christian.

But after I became a Christian, my life changed a lot like I used to live and do everything for myself but now I live for God. I mean it should to be like this but it’s not that easy. Most my friend always made fun of me and Som. And there had so many things that made me feel very tired of being a Christian. I always have questions about God you know it can be from the questions people asked me or it can be from my own experiences. I had a very hard time to be a Christian in the beginning. I almost lost from God so many time but I really thank God that he’s always with me and try to teach and help me to know him more.
