diogenes

Diogenes

When I read about his story I enjoyed it which made me curious about his life. I liked when he introduced himself by saying “I am Diogenes the Dog. I nuzzle the kind, bark at the greedy and bite scoundrels.” Diogenes of Sinope (412 – 323 BC) is one of interesting Greek philosophers of the Classical Era. He is a philosopher in the group called “Cynics”, a group that is focused on living a simple life.

He lived in a community in the urban market. He lived in a wooden container for olive oil. He was not wealthy at all, living with food from the people to survive the day. He has a ridiculous attitude towards social thought. And sometimes he is rude in the presence of people.

   What is the truth?

Diogenes met a wealthy man and he invited him to visit his house. The wealthy man showed him around the house and showed him how rich he was. Diogenes spit in the wealthy man’s face. Then he picked up a rough handkerchief, and wiped the man’s face, and apologized for doing that. He accidentally spit, but in this room it was so clean that he did not want to make it dirty. The only dirty place he can find is this man’s face?

Another story that is interesting is at the market, someone threw a bone to him because they thought he wanted to mimic a dog’s behavior. Diogenes was not angry at those people. He acted like a dog, then urinated on someone who threw bones at him. On some days, at daytime he walked in the market with a lantern, so people asked him why he was holding the lantern. He said  “I am looking foran honest man.”

When some people asked him why he took the money from people and he said he want to show them how they ought to spend their money,”  and another question that I like him to replied when people asked him “What is the difference between life and death?” He said “No difference.” “Well then, why do you remain in this life?” “Because there is no difference.”
