If we talk about composers of classic songs we might know only famous male composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Frédéric Chopin and Claude Debussy. However in that time the western society thought that men important more than woman. So if a woman wrote a song it was not widely known.

Hildegard von Bingen was one of the most important composers of the Medieval Period. She was a nun. She was born in Germany on September 16, 1098, and died on September 17, 1179.

In the past Christianity woman were often excluded from participation in church rituals. They were not allowed to sing hymns in the church. When the church allowed a woman to compose music, it was a very special case.

In the history of music Hildegard von Bingen is a known songwriter, and she made clear that she was a composer.

Hildegard von Bingen has a position in Western music. This is not common and in fact that she was a German nun who was very influential in politics and religion. She had been a leading nun at the age of 38, and many have pointed out that she was a prominent figure in the Church, such as how she was reported to have moved the convents at Rupertsburg to be free from the clergy so they could manage themselves. She was successful with that request.

She was well known and had strong relationships with many people including the pope, the governor and the emperor. This resulted in her having a higher status than other nuns and she was allowed to write religious books. That was the duty of the male priests.

Moreover, she also preached sermons. Which was impossible for nuns. She attacked corruption in the Church and she called for reform and was against  using money to buy a position at the church.

According to Hildebrand Records, her story was written in a book called Vita, saying that she was born into an aristocratic family. She was sent to live with the church since childhood. At the age of eight, historians speculate that she may have worked in the herbarium or the sanctuary at the church.

Hildegard von Bingen said she saw a vision of God at the age of three and began to understand the vision at the age of five. She was reluctant to tell about her visions. Until she was 41 years old she claims that she was instructed by God to record everything she saw in a book. Many books were written by Hildegard. In addition to memoirs, there are many stories that show that she is a philosopher of that time. Especially, she wrote about natural science. It covers the universe, animals, plants, soil and water. In addition, she is famous as a herbal doctor.

In the book, she claims that she was not educated. This makes the view of her visions more serious. Because if an uneducated person can write a  hard books. How did she do it?

She also invented her own font. In the book, she wanted the book’s content to be confidential within her convent’s territory. It was a great new invention. She was challenging the power of the mainstream Latin font, which the Church forced every church to use. This situation showed that she had the power to work independently.

In music she was a creative composer who composed new melodies. At that time the priests often composed songs with the structure of an old melody.

She wrote Ordo Virtutum, a play about the morals of Christianity. There are 16 lyrics for women and another one for the devil.

I like her story because I think she is a smart woman at that time and she was fighting for other nuns and wrote beautiful books for the world to read.
