Topic: “Why do we leave everything to later time?”

Final Draft:

The day of submitting the essay assignment for our class is set in two weeks, and here I am enjoying the beautiful, sunny day with my friends at Dolores Park instead of preparing for that important school task. Yes, you may regard me as a bad student just like what others may think about me. But hey, who among you have never put things off especially doing assignments? Everybody is guilty, I guess. The purpose of this essay is not to define procrastination since all of you must already have an idea of what it is based on my example. Instead, this essay explores the reason why people procrastinate, the harmful affects of delaying tasks to procrastinators and to people around them, and the possible solutions to this so – called “thief of time.”

Frances Booth in her article The Five Key Reasons Why You Procrastinate presents interesting facts about the causes of procrastination. First, she states that people put things off simply because they do not have the interest in doing the task at all and they will think of numerous ways just to avoid do it. This only shows how undesirable the task is to them. Second, she mentions that when the task is too difficult, people tend to lose their motivation because they do not want to exert extra energy to know the answers to theirs questions or they are afraid of making mistakes. Likewise, when the task is too easy or too boring, they feel less challenged, and as a result, they put things off. Third, she explains that when people are confronted with a great amount of task, they just feel overwhelmed and they believe that the possibility of doing and finishing the task is something that will not happen in reality. Fourth, she says that people procrastinate when they feel physically tired and they think that having a break is the only thing they need. Finally, she points out that we put things off when we start a new project that seems different from what we used to do or because of our fear in not succeeding in a task that is beyond our limitations.

The causes of procrastination mentioned above only show that people may have valid reasons why they procrastinate. However, I personally believe that the harmful affects of this behavior sometimes do not justify the validity of these causes. For instance, a person’s procrastination might affect his credibly as an employee and his work in general. I remember the time when a friend of mine was supposed to finish one important task in his company and he put it off simply because he felt it waste easy for him. Finishing said task, however, was necessary in order for him to start doing a major project. Time passed and the deadline was over. He was not able to finish the task, and this led to another unfinished task – the major project. He was then reprimanded by his boss and he almost got fired. Consequently, not only did his procrastination affect his work credibility, it also affected the company’s business and his boss’s reputation. Actually, because of my friend’s procrastination his boss lost the great opportunity to close a business deal, and the worse the company also lost its prospective clients. For Jesus, he have never refused or procrastinated people who need Jesus’s helped. Jesus always helped people who is poor, who is bad, and who is disabled.

Fig.2: No procrastinated help

Based on the examples given, it is apparent that procrastination results in situations that may be detrimental to a person’s life involving his career and the people he works for, and in order to avoid the negative consequences of procrastination, possible suggestions should be taken into consideration. First, a person should understand the real importance of accomplishing the task for himself or for the other people that are involved in it. If he knows how much valuable it is to do and finish the task and how it could jeopardize his work and the work of others once the task is not accomplished, then he will not put it off. Another possible solution is a person should develop a sense of responsibility and maturity which means not just depending on what he personally feels. In the sample situation above, if my friend had not only depends on his feelings about the task and had been responsible enough to do it, the situation would not have been as bad as that. I believe that if a person wants to stop procrastinating, then he needs to have in his heart a sense of obligation to do something or at least have a control over his emotions. With this in mind, he would not be at risk of losing  his job and affecting the work of others. Like Jesus’s life that Everyone can not control Jesus, except Jesus control himself. Like Jesus’s life that Everyone can not control Jesus, except Jesus control himself.

Fig.3: Edward Young

In conclusion, I definitely agree with the words of Edward Young (Fig.3) who says that “procrastination is the thief of time.” In today’s world, because of our procrastination we are robbed of our precious time – time to improve ourselves, time to progress, time to be of help to others, and time to succeed as a community and as a country. Despite this, however, I am still optimistic that we all have the potential to change our bad habit and eradicate this bad practice in our present society. Recognizing the fact that procrastination is a big problem that we must all solve and believing that solving this problem must begin from su is already a big step towards this big change. To start, I will now finish this essay assignment while I still have time to proofread it and then submit this school task to my teacher on time.
